Hi all,

I know this may be a daft question but can anyone tell me if there is a single shade of BR Blue?

I have three Locomotives - a 33, a 45 and a 37, all of which are from different manufacturers (Lima, Mainline and Hornby respectively) and they are all different shades of blue.

Is there just one colour they all should be or was it normal to find Locomotives of differing colours?

Actually there were two shades of B.R. blue. The later blue was darker then the earlier B.R. blue. Not a great difference but enough to notice. Thats why when you match some models from the 80's to later models there's a slight difference. I used to think the model makers were a little off but when looking at photos in books etc I saw the model makers were not that wrong. I then saw that when ordering model paints I was asked over the phone what date I was modelling as there were two shades compared to when. I think I've also seen reference to this in a model railway magazine somewhere. Here is where it gets confusing as well. Over time the B.R. blue paint fades into a lighter colour to add more colour differences, so if recently the prototype was repainted it was darker then one that had been out for 4 years or more exposed in the weather.
