I have a layout going right round the room and have about 5 circles of track with points and sidings etc. I've read that it would be handy to have some switches in place so i can isolate areas to detect where problems are if they shoul occur. I have recently started wiring the inner 2 tracks and as of yet it's not working even though i've double checked all the droppers. Can anyone recommend a simple switch system so i can test sections of the track and give basic instructions of fitting them to a complete novice please?

Hi,
Is this a dc or DCC layout?

If DCC then there is some useful information on sectioning the layout and providing current limiting using car lamps or complete overload protection with all electronic units here...
Link to web page (http://www.brian-lambert.co.uk/DCC.htm#Over%20current%20protection.) Just scroll down a little
You will need to install insulated rail joiners (IRJs) to all rails leading into and out of the protected zone.

If dc control then this is not so easy or readily achievable!
