Hey all - I am trying to find out what sort of scatter to use on my layout to create a realistic goods yard. I have ballast but would also like to know how to make my ballast darker for my freight area/goods yard. PLEASE HELP!!! I would also love to know how to make walkways across tracks...is it basically thin cardboard cut to size and then shaded with something like Noch Powders? Please help! Richard

p.s my direct email is cartesianphilosopher@hotmail.co.uk

Hi
Goods yards are normally very dark earth coloured or earth/ballast mix in or around the tracks and you could use just shades of brown scatter including some coal dust too if that's one of the wagons likely to come into the yard?
The other alternative is to use a plaster type filler and spread this over the whole area to rail level. When dry (at least 48 hours later) either leave as is to suit the area or scribe cobble stones / slabs into the surface. Don't forget to scribe flange ways inside the rails to allow the wheels to run along siding(s) tracks.

Here's an example of a simple plastered yard with cobbles and tarmac and earth etc.
