Hi there i wondered if anybody can help.

My son has recently got a new Hornby Thomas the Tank Engine set for Christmas, which he is pleased about, but today, when we tried his Grandparents old trains on (A Triang Princess royal, and a later Jinky I guess) it trips out the power on his hornby controller (I know the controller has a short Circuit cut-off) I have yet to tried any other power pack (I have a Triang controller, and a later Hornby controller (i think its at least 10 years old)) I know that these Triang trains did once work, and they did work on my older hornby controller, but for some reason they don't.

I have assumed that these triang trains would work on the newer hornby track and controller.

Any light shed on this problem would be much appreciated!

Dan

Hi
Assuming only one loco is trying to be moved by the controller at any time, then the Hornby one should do the job ok. Its rated at 800ma (0.8Amp).
Most older locos will draw more current than modern motors do, but they should still be within the 0.8Amp range of the Hornby PSU.
I would give the older locos a good service.
Lubricate all moving parts and ensure the motor brushes are in good order and that the motor commutator (if it can accessed) is clean too. Also lightly and with the aid of a sewing pin, scrape out the insulation gaps between the comms copper segments. Don't forget to lubricate the motor drive shaft bearings where the shaft emerges from both ends of the motor casing. Apply oil via a sewing pin dipped into the oil then touched onto the place where its needed. Rule of thumb when lubricating.. "If you can see the oil its probably too much!" If over lubricated then blot up surplus immediately with a tissue or piece of kitchen paper.
You can always use a new 9 volt PP3 battery to make the motor revolve if a power supply isnt readily available :-)

Thanks for the reply, but it doesn't really answer my question. I will have a look at servicing the older trains, but it doesn't really explain, why the newer Hornby Controller trips out as soon as the power is turned on to the track for the older trains, even with just a train on the track at a time. I did think that the older trains, would consume more power, but i didn't think that much power to be honest!.
