hi there. im a fellow new member.
i have used DCC and DC. if you dont mind the extra expence DCC is fantastic. the ability to control any of your engines from any location on the track without the need for isolation sections and a control panel the size of a small town. you can digitise anything you like from turntables to the lighting in buildings. make your own street lighing switchable by wireing in to a digital chip and giving it an address. all it takes is a bit of imagination. you can go for full computer control allowing your PC's software to set points and routes when needed and setting back when the train has passed.
DCC is the way forward. having said that. the last train i bought was a Dapol class 156, with Dummy set. i'll give you the DCC and DC price break down
.....................................DCC.......... ....DC
Train 2 car Motorised.........150.............150
Train 2 Car Dummy..............50..............50
internal lighting strips x4.......20
at least 2 decoders..............70
as you can see, to run that train on DC it would cost me £200 for a 4 car set.
but for DCC its a staggering £290 before ive left the shop.
unless i was to computer control the layout i would remain DC for point control asuming you will elecrify the points.
any way. welcome to the forum. if you fancy any information on DCC i found the Peco series of "Shows you how" and little gold mine of information. pick them up from your local hobby shop. or |Peco direct.

Thanks Ray.....Like all things in life its the fear of the unknown!!!! Think I will start off with one of Hornbys digital train sets off Ebay, therefore getting two chipped locos and controller to play with.Should be a good start for my second layout,a 1960,s engine shed and depot. Regards Roger
