TCS W5X decoder issues

I'm wondering if anyone has had any running issues when using this decoder?
I have installed this decoder on a couple of X04 and ringfield powered locos and have experienced poor running with each one.
All run well on DC and have been serviced with wheels pick up and wheel backs checked. Motors also cleaned with fresh brushes.
I must admit I am a bit stumped!
DCC controller is prodigy express.
Decoder hasbeenfactory reset with no improved results?????
This decoder has quietdrive bemf and either motor control.
Is it simply the case that it is not suitable for these older applications??

An expert will be along shortly, but in the meantime try turning the BEMF off ( make a note of the setting figure first), then re-test , I think this is the usual advice ...worth a go.

Do as suggested by Pete127 and also remove any motor suppression capacitors and at the same time remove any chokes (inductors) if fitted. Caps can be simply be cut off but chokes will need a wire soldered in to replace them. So you end up with nothing in between the decoder and the motors wiring tags except the two decoder wires (Orange & Grey).

Please let us know if the above helped ??

Update on decoder performance

I had already removed capacitors etc.
Indeed all of my DCC installations are as per the advice given, thanks.
I have tried the decoder in a mainline warship which runs Ok.

It seems not to be bothered whether BEMF is on or off either.

So Mainline pancake motor Ok
X04 rubbish
Hornby ringfield rubbish.
But both run Ok when fitted with standard Bachmann decoders.

I will do some further fiddling.

Try setting CV 56 to 6 and CV 57 to 50.

Are you sure you have specified the correct decoder. I'm not sure that TCS have a "W" series decoder.

I have to admit that I was a little puzzled when I first saw this thread as I have never heard of this decoder type. They used to do a TH150W decoder but this was in the days before BEMF when TCS had their own method of setting loco control with what they called Dither. I also can't find the decoder on the Antics website (http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/1477_1.html), unless my eyesight is failing, and it isn't listed at Digitrains or on the TCS website. Quietdrive was just a way of controlling engine noise.

I think you might do better with using a more up-to-date decoder which has a greater continuous output than 1 amp as older motors tend to require a greater current draw. Perhaps it would be an idea to measure the current draw and stall current on DC to verify the decoder current requirement.
