The most important thing is to find methods that work for you - which you have.

Track pins don't work well as spikes. You need fine spikes with a rectangular head like the real thing. KBscale sell some as well as various US suppliers. I make mine from office staples. I always predrill a hole using a piece of piano wire as the drill bit.

For pointwork I suggest using 00-SF standards especially in the crossing (frog) as this will reduce the slop and clunky running and look even more like the real thing.
