I don't think a "stay alive" cap is supplied TWD. The 10 is for the decoder only, but with additional wires which may be for a stay alive to be added later. R-

Looking at the diagram on post #7 it look like blue and black wires are for lighting. Perhaps they can be used for another purpose though, I am not sufficiently up on these things. R-

No, I didn't think it was but the additional cost of one still represents excellent value.

I'm not so sure, they claim to be NMRA standard - is that a standard? If it was me I would follow my own suggestion and meter it. If it was a function output then it would need to be called by the controller and therefore no volts berween them and the blue positive rail.

Anyway the OP has emailed them so let's see what they come back with.

Ah, I see what you mean. I don't know how much stay alive costs as an add on but for sure the chip as it stands is cheap enough - same a Hattons basic. R-

There are many standards set by the NMRA - this manufacturer is not on the currently published register but that is June 2014. As you say, lets see what comes back. R-

Hi
The two wires are for Stay Alive connections.
Their own SA unit is to be released shortly (if not already available?)

Thanks FB - finger on the pulse as always. I see the chip on your link is a higher spec than that in OP - a good thing, and it seems it will be (shortly?) available with a stay alive pre-wired. It just gets better and better. R-

I've just been doing some research on a different forum regarding making your own SA units. Basically all you need is a capacitor/s, hefty ones of at least 2000mF, a resistor in series to limit the charge current, and a diode across the resistor to bypass it when discharging. This diy method will surely be a cheaper option for those with the required skills. The article shows how to connect directly to the decoder's BR output, but I'm assuming (never a good idea I know), that the black (-ve) and blue (+ve) wires supplied here save you from that.

Edit: There is a link to making your own on FB's link but it appears to be broken.
