I'm using a couple of those and they do what I want. Each is installed under the layout with wires to a speaker in the building (church tower and a garage). Both are powered by the same 5 volt supply which was a cheap unit also via eBay. I use a memory stick for each one not a TF card since I had the sticks already.

A couple of things about those units - there is about a 2 second delay on power-up before they start playing from the memory stick (this may not occur with a TF card, don't know, never tried) so to get instant sound they are permanently powered on but I put a switch in one of the speaker leads. The player does loop at the end of the mp3 file automatically but there is another 2 second delay when that occurs. The other thing is that although the volume can be adjusted with one of the buttons on the unit, it reverts to normal volume again on power-up. But at the price they're hard to beat.

I'm now imagining you holding a gas lantern over your layout whilst you play trains with a crackly record of train sounds playing on an old gramophone in the corner.

Not at all, oil lamp. I spent a big chunk of my working life staring at screens. The only time any type of computer gets to see my layout is if I take a picture with my ipad. Apart from the controller and a few switches itís all handraulic.

That is the sort of thing that TWD suggested/is using which Iíd like to try. TWD has offered to help me with programming code.

I don't think they require programming. Well I hope not, I ordered two.
There seem to be quite a few downloadable effects online so I'll start there and see how I get on.

Maybe me or maybe the wine but Iím not seeing how to use them. Let me know how you get on.

Yesterday and today Iíve been hardwiring all the mains supplies and work bench supplies, much better than extension leads. Will have to get a real sparkles in soon because the whole supply to the train shed appears to be a spur from the kitchen, which is OK until a minor problem zaps the fridge freezer.

I still have two sections of track to connect to the power bus and then the elevated section to lay and wire up. Then on to point motors

Will check back when I get there.

Good morning, I've installed a small speaker in my church tower and linked it directly via hear phone jack to my iPhone ,from there I use sound dog files which can be of any thing from church bells which I use to background sounds of your choice it works well for me and adds just a touch of atmosphere the the layout. Here's a link to sound dog site

The sound units havenít arrived yet, but thatís not unexpected, but I have been experimenting and researching available sounds.

I found that many of the free sound clips are quite short and many of the sites have downloading restrictions so maybe thatís not the way I will go. However those Ďmoodí cds mentioned are, in some cases available on YouTube.

Now I donít think you can download the soundtrack from there so I resorted to a method perfected many years ago with a tape recorder in front of the TV when Top of the Pops was on. Except this time I downloaded a sound recorder app to my iPad and stood it in front of the computer while the YouTube clip was playing.

And it works a treat. Apart from when the phone rang in the middle of the recording but that was easily edited out in the app and you canít see the join.

I now have a ten minute mp3 clip of waves and seagulls ready for the harbour.
