Default The Shankly to Gdynia Railway

Hi Everyone,
My layout is still very much a work in progress. It's an OO gauge roundy-roundy with four circuits and a branch line which will eventually end at a pier. The three inner circuits are Hornby track - 1st, 2nd and 3rd radius and are connected to each other. The outer circuit and branch line aren't connected to the inner three because they (the outer) are old Triang-Hornby track. I've done it like this because I've got a couple of locomotives from my boyhood with the older wider wheel flanges (is that the right word)?

The layout is semi-portable in the sense that I can unscrew the legs and prop the single base board up against the wall of our loft room. The good news is that the loft is properly converted with stairs, velux window and a radiator, so it's a real nice place to 'ride the rails' as they say in Chuggington. I said that the layout is semi-portable because I am not entirely sure that it could be extracted from the loft on account of the angle of the stairs and door. It was constructed in the loft and is probably destined to stay there for ever. That's OK with me as I've no desire to ever move again. Dunrovin'!

Regarding the name, I suspect that many of you may have already worked out my football allegiance, hence Shankly. I toyed with Paisley, which I believe is a real place, Dalglish (difficult to spell) and Gerrard but in the end I decided on Shankly which is where it all began ( the football, not the model railway). Regarding Gdynia, (also difficult to spell) I wanted a 'water feature' in the layout.
My wife is Polish and last summer we went to the Polish seaside and visited my wife's aunt in Gdynia. Gdynia is a port city and I liked it very much, so in my head it became Gdynia. So there we are.

It's getting late, so I'll call it a day and upload some photos tomorrow, Ian Alan

Hi Everyone,
Here are some pictures as promised. If you've ever followed my thread on the welcome page (Newbie from Essex with Questions), you will see that not much has changed since I uploaded some photos in January. Since then I've nailed down some track and taken it up again with some minor changes.

What is appearing on camera for the first time is my pride and joy: The Triang-Hornby Battle Space Turbo Car, which my late dad acquired in the 70s. I call it The Rocket! It's 'heavy duty ramming spike,' aka nose, is a little flat (my son crashed it last year) but it still goes like a maniac. It was malfunctioning (hence it's non-appearance in photos), but I cleaned the wheels with alcohol using my wife's cotton buds and it 's back in action. Boy oh boy, were they gunged up. It's a train that needs driving rather than just letting it chug round on its own. I've realised that the loft room floor isn't perfectly flat and it labours going one way but speeds up precariously going the other. All rather fun.

Let's see if this will upload, fingers crossed, Ian Alan

Talking The Rocket

Yes MG it is rather jolly. You have to be careful when starting it up. If you've accidentally got the controller switched to reverse, the 'turbo' flies right off and across the room at some considerable speed. It could take out someone's eye! Most impressive. It certainly brings out the little boy inside a man.

The fourth photo from yesterday's post shows clearly the squashed nose of the Rocket, courtesy of my son's speeding. It's a Battle Space train, so it's supposed to be 'military' although it's only weapon is (was) it's nose. It's also coloured high visibility red and yellow. That said, there is something sinister about the way it's lurking in the siding. Somewhat reminiscent of an ambush predator waiting for its prey. Perhaps I've watched too many episodes of Planet Dinosaur.

I'll upload a few more photos although these are more pedestrian than yesterday's. Ian Alan

Default Happy Easter

Hi Everyone,
We have guests, so the legs are off the baseboard and it's propped against a wall. It's good because it proves to my wife that I haven't taken over the loft unconditionally. We can still get out the inflatable bed and 'hey, presto!' the loft is a spare bedroom again.

I've tried to upload some new photos, but the site can't handle it, so I'll try again tomorrow. Have a great Easter, what remains of it, Ian Alan

Default 'Porrtait' Photos

Hi Everyone,
You may have noticed that I like running three or four trains at once and taking 'action' photos of them. But I started to think that the blurry speeding pictures may not be to everyone's taste, so I've taken some static shots (non-moving, not the form of electricity). Well, I'm an all-or-nothing kind of guy, so I've gone for the fully-posed look.

I've tried uploading but the site can't handle my request. I guess that the file size is too big as I took the photos on my proper camera, not my phone. Watch this space and I'll try to get something uploaded. Unfortunately, I can't take any new photos for a while as the layout is against the wall, Ian Alan

Mod edit. Thread title amended for you.
