KnickerbockerGloryTV is on a distinguished road
Default The Great Model Railway Challenge

Hello all, Knickerbockerglory TV are working with Channel 5 to create "The Great Model Railway Challenge".

Here is more information you haven't seen the flyer or meet the team at the Ally Pally exhibition this past weekend. From reading posts about other programming, it seems that there may not be a keen interest, but I'm here to provide information about this format.

This series will shine a light on the amazing world of model railways and present it to a larger audience than ever before, showcasing and celebrating the talent and skill of UK model railway enthusiasts.

For the first time on British television, the nation's most talented railway modellers will compete with each other to create jaw-dropping layouts and diorama for an exciting new programme for Channel 5. Introduced to the audience in their homes or clubs with layouts they have been working on for many years, the enthusiasts will then come together at Fawley Hill Railway museum to see what they can produce in a shorter time frame, BUT with the help of leading manufacturers and railway experts.

We are looking for people who would want to compete in teams of 6, the idea being that each team member will bring different skill and expertise to the group, to take their layout to the next level.

15 teams of 6 will go through a series of heats leading up to a final, and will be judged by experts in the field, as well as their peers.

Ideally the competing teams would be either a group of friends who share a love of the hobby, or perhaps a family, or people from the same model railway club.

The nitty gritty:

- Filming will take place in Henley in May and June 2018 and competitors would need to commit to filming for at least 3 weekdays filming for the heats. We will cover costs for transportation and accommodation.

- If teams were successful in their heat and went through to the final, they would need to film for an additional 3 days.

- Dates are below (each team would only be required for a heat and if they are successful and progress - the semi-final and final)

HEAT 1 - 16th - 18th May
HEAT 2 - 21st - 23rd May
HEAT 3 - 24th - 26th May
HEAT 4 - 30th - 1st June
HEAT 5 - 7th - 9th June
FINAL - 14th - 16th June

- Each team will be given the theme of their challenge 3/4 weeks in advance so that they can plan and we are allowing an element of pre-building skeletons of landscapes of dioramas.

- Teams will be encouraged to prepare their landscape skeletons on a 10 x 5 baseboard at the competition, the layout can be smaller than this but we encourage you to use as much of the baseboard as possible.

- We will also supply scratch build materials. But teams are encouraged to bring in their own tool kits if there is equipment they prefer to use

- We are working alongside all the major manufacturers to provide track, kits and build materials. We have been advised by the manufacturers to encourage teams where possible to build in OO gauge as they will have the most choice of build materials, however we are open to teams who want to build in other gauges.

The application deadline is approaching very soon, so if anyone is interested then please email me at or feel free to call us at 02087406300.
