am i right in thinking this motor and reductrion gearbox runs between 3 and 6 volts?

Depends on the motor used.
The Frizzinghall Peco TT conversion motor is 6 volt. But 12 volt geared motors are obtainable - Maplins and Expo Tools both sell these.
