OK this is how the engine came into my possession. I reckon with my modelling skills from other disciplines and some electrical knowhow that I can make this model run again. I don't like black though so I'm gonna paint it another colour

That was my first OO loco in the late 50's. Ended up Maroon if I remember rightly. Nice and easy to maintain with a screwdriver and a hammer.

Looks in very good nick, should get it running in no time at all.

It was just a tin of maroon paint. My dad bought it in about 1962, don’t think I have it any more

Get a tin of Crimson Lake from Phoenix Precision Paints.

I'm going to visit the model railway exhibition in York in a couple of weeks, do they have traders at these shows?

Often more traders than layouts.

Book a place and avoid the queues and get a reasonable car park spot. I've been a few times and it's always manic early doors and it's such a big place you need to get there as early as you can.

Even using public transport is no fun as when everyone is leaving the busses can't cope and you queue for ages. (There have been specials laid on when I've been in the past.)
