I think a lot of the difference in cost is the additional functionality. I do not know how much you can adjust a TTS decoder but I do know that on a Zimo one you can adjust accelleration and decelleration rates as well as vary them according to speed. For instance you can have them accellerate at a lower rate when going slower. You can also have a 'loaded' profile or an 'unloaded' profile where exhaust 'chuffs' sound louder and accelleration is slower when under load.

One of the most important parameters for me however is the ability to time the exhaust chuffs to the rotation of the wheels. When you get this spot on you will hear six chuffs for one complete wheel rotation on a three cylinder engine or four exhaust chuffs on a twin cylinder loco.

I think that functionality and adjustability is one of the main reasons for the larger cost as well as the three year repair/replace warranty.

As with everything we are spoilt for choice nowadays so all we have to do is decide what we prefer. For me I have decided to go for Zimo sound decoders but I only have six operational DCC locos and I do not see myself as having too many more. As for wives and shovels well she bought me two of them for my birthday last year!

The real expense though is in the OO Live Steam locos and that is why I only have two of them!

Iíll make a note of "six operational DCC locos and I do not see myself as having too many more" and check on that figure in a couple of years.

At the moment funds need to go into building the layout and I am continually surprised at the cost of scenic items and materials so locos defenately take second place at the moment. I must admit I cannot guarrantee what the future holds though!

Thats the reason, ( one of them), that i have no scenery, materials, or ballast. Just run trains. Never seen the need to do owt else. john
