Not planned for a descent ?...... I have been there and figured out if I cut out the track bed from the baseboard with a jigsaw and then glued another ( wider) piece of board on the underside of the baseboard then I can easily drop the track at least by the thickness of the baseboard on the original track plan ....... add some additional packing between the baseboard and the new board underneath and you can drop some more - just need to extend the length of the cut-out and build in a gradient ....... there is always a cunning plan out there.

Hope this helps - Richard

Only to add ; if you have curves in your gradient, this can cause more drag on the rail stock the engine is pulling.

Probably a matter for trial and error ! I chickened out of putting gradients on my layout and ended up with two tracks flat one running above the other.

I can see now where I need to go. I need risers to raise the rail up to a mound and then down to ground level again. A tunnel on the return journey will go through the same mound/embankment :) .
Sorry for the confusion  .

Another example of prototype "copying" modeller's errors. I thought this shot more appropriate in this thread. Copied from facebook, photo credit Robin Nelson.
